Habitat for Humanity-New York City was founded in 1984 and is one of more than 1,500 US affiliates of Habitat for Humanity International. As an independently run affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International, founded in 1976, the organization is an economical, faith based housing ministry that seeks to eliminate poverty housing from the world. New York was the site of the first Jimmy Carter work project on the lower east side. In 2000, Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter returned to help build affordable housing in central harlem and Bedford-Stuyvesant. HFH-NYC builds in all boroughs of NYC, using no government money for construction, but instead relying on financial support from individuals, corporations and foundations. According to fiscal audits, 82% of all funds raised go toward home construction, and 18% goes to overhead.
